The graph illustrates estimations about how many people will study three common world languages, over a decade from 2020 to 2030.
Overall, what stands out from the graph is that there are upward trends in the number of linguistic learners for three languages. Another interesting point is that the figure for English is likely to overwhelm those of the others over the span of time in question.
Looking at details, as regards Spanish, the number starts at well over 200 millions. Right after that, the year 2022 will undergo a significant rise, soaring to around 290 millions. Subsequently, there will be a negligible growth to reach 300 millions in 2024. However, at this point, Mandarin will be going up dramatically, rocketing to just over 290 millions, nearly reaching the number of Spanish students. By the year 2030, the number students learning Mandarin will have overtaken Spanish's. The figures are 560 millions and about 500 millions respectively.
In addition, the number of English students also follow the same increasing pattern. During the first 4 years of the period, it will surge by just under 160 millions. Despite falling sharply to approximately 640 millions in 2026, it will soon recover and then shoot up to reach the peak of the whole period which is around 740 millions.
