The charts below show the level of participation in education and science in developing countries and industrialised countries in 1980 and 1990.
The three bar charts illustrate changes of average years of schooling, how many scientists and technicians and expenditure spending on research and development in developing countries and industrialised countries between 1980 and 1990.
Overall, It is obvious that the figures for industrialised countries were much higher than that for developing countries. Another interesting point is that there was a general upward trend in taking part in education and science over the period in question.
Looking at the detail, by 1980, the number of average years of schooling in developing countries accounted for around 3 years, compared to only one third that of industrialised countries. The figure increased slightly in developing countries, while a bigger change can be seen in industrialised countries, reaching nearly 11 years in 1990.
There were only around 10 scientists and technicians per 1000 people in developing countries in 1980, then went up to nearly 20 in 1990. In addition, the figure in industrialised countries was nearly double to approximately 70 per 1000 people in 1990. If we look at spending on research and development, industrialised countries invested more money that developing countries, at around 150 million dollars in 1980 to about 350 million dollars in 1990. By contrast, developing countries spent only about 50 billion dollars in 1980, after that fell by a half in 1990.
