Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they challenge the specific points made reading the passage.
It is stated in the article that population of birds in the U.S will decline and three reasons of support are provided. The professor, however, explains the problems with these arguments and refutes each of the author's reasons.
First, the passage posits that the expansion of human population endangers the habitats used by birds. Nevertheless, the professor contends that while this is true for some types of birds, urban environment actually provides a larger habitat for other birds. The increase in the populations of seagulls in landfills and pigeons in street is an example of this. She adds that hawks and falcons have also been attracted to cities due to the abundance of pigeons and rodents. As a result, there won't be a uniform decline of birds population.
Second, the reading avers that the inevitable increase of agricultural activities will lead to the destruction of birds habitats. The professor, argues to the contrary by stating that although this is true, it is not as the reading discusses. She explains that less and less land is being used for agricultural use in the U.S and the increase of production in this field is because of new crops and the larger variety that they have which means that more food per unit of land can be produced, so the destruction of birds' habitats won't be necessary.
Third, the article claims that more use of chemical pesticides equals more harm to birds.Nonetheless, The professor refutes this by stating that, in fact, traditional pesticides have been detrimental to birds but as people became aware of that, new and less toxic pesticides were developed. Also, more pest resistant crops were introduced which reduced the need of using pesticides, thus causing less harm to birds.
