The reading claims that the coins which have been founded in the state of Maine are fake and someone want to mislead public. Also there is not any historical evidences to prove this matter and provides three reasons to support its approach. However, the lecturer finds all ideas which have been mentioned by reading dubious and presents some evidences to refute them all.
At the first place, the author argues that there is long distance between discovered place and settlements of Norse. They lived in far eastern Canada and the site is far than thousand kilometers. In contrast, the speaker brings up the idea that there are many other objects that have been founded far away their settlement. There are reasonable historical evidences that show they travelled across North America and they could reach far distance, but they did not bring back them.
Furthermore, the reading passage holds the view that coins have been discovered only in this site and archaeologists cannot find any coin at other Canadian sites. So it can prove that Norse did not bring any coins from Europe. On the contrary, the professor dismisses this issue due to the fact that it is not necessary find coins in other sites. The Norse did not have a permanent settlement and when they came back to Europe, they would not pack their coins and might forget to take back all of their coins.
Finally, the passage asserts that they could not trade with these coins by Native American. Because the native American could not understand that the coins are valuable at that time and did not assume them as money. Conversely, the speaker underlines the fact that it is true that the Norse did not use the coins as money, but it could attract the Native North American. The silver coins could have appealing and beauty. The Native American had other jewelry and the Norse could trade with them by these coins because they are also attractive and wonderful.
