Concern about the phenomenon known as global warming has been growing in recent years. Earths temperature is rising, largely as a result of human activity. Since the Industrial Revolution, humans have added significantly to the greenhouse gases in the Earths atmosphere through increases in activities such as cutting down forests and burning fossil fuels like coal and oil. Greenhouse gases hold heat in the atmosphere, and to a certain extent, their presence is natural. An artificial increase in the amount of these gases, however, leads to a rise in temperatures on Earth.
The reading discusses global warming and rising temperature which have several undesirable effects on earth. The lecture provides various examples of how rising temperature in earth causes environmental and economic difficulties for a region in the north east of America.
First, the lecture mentions the data collected from the north east of U.S. that supports increased temperature by at least several degrees. As the reading suggests, the emission of carbon dioxide from motor vehicles results in temperature rising, so the lecture supports this claim by reporting the analysis performed on the data collected from the north east of U.S.
Second, the professor explains that the yearly snow fall has been decreased due to the rise in temperature. The passage clearly states that temperature rises 1.5 F on average which explains why yearly snow fall decreased.
Third, the professor states the economic effects of temperature rising on ski industry and local businesses. The reading states several consequences of change on the weather pattern that includes a reduction in tourism industry profitability as the professor explained. The professor also mentions local hotels that affected by a reduction in the number of people coming for ski resorts.
