TPO 44 - Integrated Writing Task
The reading passage suggests three reasons why some archaeologists think the European silver coin found in the United States is a fake rather than a historical remain. However, the lecturer disagrees with the statement and offers three arguments.
Firstly, although the coin was far away from the place where a Norse stayed in North America, it doesn't mean that the Native Americans could not move such a long distance to the Norse settlement and brought it back. The lecturer argues that there were other objects that were found as an evidence to show that the Natives traveled around and carried cargos back to the inhabitant.
Second, the writer claims that there were no other coins found in Norse settlement. On the other hand, the lecturer refutes this point and disputes that the Norse did not live in North America forever. They traveled to the State and went back to Europe. There is a possibility that the Norse brought abundant silver coins to the state, and then packed all of them when they headed back to Europe.
Last but not the least, even though the native Americans did not use the silver coins as money, the Norse still could trade with them only if the native people were interested in those beautiful coins. The native made use of the sparkling and shiny coins to make jewelry such as necklace.
