cane toad
The author enumerates some possible solutions for reducing the number of cane toad, a kind of amphibian native to Central and South America, that was intentionally introduced to Australia to eat harmful insects in that region. The lecturer, however, refutes the proposed suggestions by mentioning some counterclaims, and she believes that they would be unsuccessful and they may bring about some damages to environment.
First, the reading asserts that building a national fence would be a practical solution since it prevents the cane toad from entering other new areas like the one that was practiced beforehand. Nonetheless, the professor roles out the probability by mentioning another possibility. She argues that eggs and young children are usually in streams, and rivers move from one side to another side of these fence, or their parents may carry them to other parts. As a result, creating fence is not an effective approach.
Second, the author claims that the cane toad can be captured and destroyed easily by a group of volunteers, not only by traps but also by hand. Therefore, government is able to run a campaign for this purpose. On the contrary, the speaker casts doubt on the influences of the aforementioned way. She thinks that numerous untrained volunteers can destroy and pose a serious threat to other kinds of toad, some of which are in danger.
Third, based on the passage, developing a type of specially designed virus is most likely another scheme to get rid of the cane toad. It is added that it may causes some impacts on other reptiles, but it does not harm a majority of them. Conversely, the lecturer withdraws the statement since she holds the opinion that other aspects of this issue should be taken into account. She points out that it may have terrible consequences on the original habitat of them, on the grounds that these toads are commonly transferred to the America by researchers and pet collectors. Hence, an infected cane toad can attack other native toads in that area. Furthermore, it may devastate other inhabitants of America, for in nature, plants and animals are related to each other, and this virus can suffer other parts of environment.
