The graph below shows waste recycling rates in the U.S. from 1960 to 2011.
The line graph illustrates the percentage of waste being recycled and the amount of waste recovery in tons in the US between 1960 and 2011.
In general terms, total waste recovery increased. However, from 1985, it skyrocketed.
It is clear from the line graph shows that the percentage of recycling remained steady over the first 10 years from 1960. The figure rose gently over the next 15 years to 10,1% in 1985. On the other hand, the amount of garbage tripled during the same period from 5.6 million tons at the begining of the period to 16,7 million tons in 1985.
In contrast, between 1985 to 2011, the proportion of recycling increased significantly from 10,1% to reached the peak of 34,7% in 2011. In addition, the amount of waste material being recycled rose dramatically in this period and it peaked at 86,9 million tons in 2011.
