In the reading, the author claims that the invasion of the zebra mussel which is a freshwater shellfish into North America is unstoppable and also poses profuse threats by pointing out some evidence. However, finding all the ideas questionable and implausible, the lecturer repudiates the claim and presents some counterarguments to the contrary.
At first, the author argues that the history of the zebra mussel's spread such as spread to the whole Europe made possible by human transportation in early 19th century convince us that this invasion cannot be stopped. Conversely, the lecturer brings up the idea that there are some ways to control the spread of mussels. Owing to the lack of people's knowledge in the past, they could not successfully restrict the spread of these species but they can do today. For example, if the ships which took on the ballast water had emptied out this water and refilled it with ocean water the mussel would have died because they could not survive in salt water.
In addition, the reading passage holds the view that zebra mussels can dominate a new habitat since most of the time in this habitat there is no predators. that being said, the lecturer disputes it by clarifying the fact that when birds recognize their major food supply has declined they change their diet from what have eaten before to eat mussels. So, the zebra mussels also are imperiled by other species in new habitats.
Finally, the author draws attention to the decline in the overall fish population as the last point is supporting the claim that zebra mussel threat lives of other species. Yet again, the lecturer dismisses it by pointing out that although overall fish will be declined by introducing the zebra mussels, they also have some positive influences. For example, they produce a plethora nutrients which are used by bottom fish and help them to grow.
