In the reading, the author claims that quackers were a strange sound which Russia sailor heard and bring three possibilities for the source of them. However, the lecturer finds all the ideas dubious and presents some evidence to refute them all.
At first, the author argues that the noises belonged to male and female orca whales. Conversely, the lecturer provides the idea that whales live near the surface water whereas submarines move in deep water. Also, the presence of whales is completely detectable. Therefore, this noises unlikely related to whales’ orca.
Furthermore, the reading passage holds the view that giant squids may produce quackers. On the contrary, the speaker underlines the fact that the noises were reported for two decades between 1960 and 1980 and after that these noises were stopped. If these noises were caused by squids, they would continue until now since these animal are living currently.
Finally, the reading asserts that foreign submarines generated these sounds. In the contrast, speaker dismisses this issue due to the fact that submarines cannot be able to move and redirect fast, nevertheless the direction of noises changed quickly. Until now, there is technology which can move fast, silent and undetectable.
