TPO-34 Integrated essay
Reading and lecture talks about causes of extinction of sea cows in siberia. Reading states three main
causes of depletion of its population. But lecture is not convinvced by these reasons.
Firstly, reading states that one of the significant factor for extenction of sea cows is excessive hunting by
human, as they are main food supply in case of extreme environment. On contrary professor cast doubt on this
statement, he said population of siberia during that time was not large enough to destruct whole habitat of sea
cow. Moreover, it is fact that these sea cows are were giant and weigh very heavy so over hunting is not possible.
Secondly, reading mention that destruction of sea cows population due lack of availability of kelps on which sea
cows have survived. In addition, destruction of kelps leads to severe reduction in number of sea cows. However,
professor denies this, distruption of ecocystem certainly can damage other marine species. For instance, may
interrupt habitat of whales, but report do not show such evidence. As a result, kelps number were
increasing rather than decreasing, so food was available for sea cows.
Thirdly, reading points out that devastation of sea cows habitat can be due to increased import and export by European.
But professor refutes that by saying that when European population arrived there were few sea cows. In addition, he thinks that growth of sea cows were diminished many years before last European visited. Therefore, professor claims that there should be another predominant reason for extinction of this sea cows species.
In conclusion, professor sucessfully casts doubt against reasons mentioned in the reading passage for the complete
loss of sea cows species
