The author of the passage claims that Elephants are creatures that captivated humans' attention for centuries because they represent extraordinary behaviors not ever seen by other species. However, the lecturer finds all the idea dubious and presents some impeccable evidence that can refute them all.
First, the author points out that when elephants find that they are going to die soon, they break away from the herd and live solely until death. On the contrary, the lecturer underlines the fact that this behavior has a practical reason. In fact, when an elephant gets older it will face some difficulties and look for softer vegetation near water. So, this is because why elephants often die near water.
Furthermore, the author holds the view that elephants are adept and they have an ability to paint meticulously. Conversely, the professor brings up the idea that trainers use elephants' ears to teach them how to paint and their ears are very sensitive. So, this training could be a trick and elephants just draw lines, which do not show a talented painter.
Finally, as set forth by the author mice have a negative effect on the elephant's behavior and they have a fear of mice. In contrast, the speaker dismisses this issue due to the fact that elephants, in general, do not react to mice and if there is any reaction, it is because of unfamiliarity. Indeed, elephants in the zoo do not react to mice owing to the fact that they are familiar with mice. If they become acquainted, they do not mind them.
