Integrated Writing - Distance Learning

Essay topics:

Integrated Writing - Distance Learning

Both the reading and the listening discuss distance learning - a recently popular way of learning in which students listen to online lectures and complete assignments by themselves. While the passage points out various benefits of this new form of acquiring knowledge, the professor talks about the drawbacks that have not been taken into account.

Firstly, according to the author, that distance learning has flexible schedules attracts many people since students can start and finish studying whenever they feel like. However, the listening indicates that this program poses great difficulties to professors because it is designed to suit the students more than the lecturers. As a result, professors are supposed to grade and evaluate students' work on a regular basis throughout the years.

Secondly, it is mentioned that most online learners show interest in the convenience of the program: the only thing they need is an Internet-linked computer, and they can listen to lectures at home or workplace, saving significant time traveling to school. Nevertheless, due to its easy accessibility, online courses are generally believed to be inferior to offline ones in terms of their quality. In addition, the professor makes the point that taking courses online does not give people the traditional university experience.

Finally, the passage states that the idea of solitary learning is absolutely advantageous to many learners, such as students with disabilities, introverts, and normal students who just need more time to absorb information from classes. The lecturer challenges this point of view by saying that seclusion can have its own disadvantages. Facing difficult problems on schoolwork, students tend to speak to the professor and get answers immediately, but that is not feasible when learning on the Internet.
