In an effort to encourage ecologically sustainable forestry practices, an international organization started issuing certifications to wood companies that meet high ecological standards by conserving resources and recycling materials. Companies that receive this certification can attract customers by advertising their products as ecocertified. Around the world, many wood companies have adopted new, ecologically friendly practices in order to receive ecocertification. However, it is unlikely that wood companies in the United States will do the same, for several reasons. First, American consumers are exposed toso much advertising that they would not value or even pay attention to the ecocertification label. Because so many mediocre products are labeled 'new" or improved,'' American consumers do not place much trust in advertising claims in general. Second, ecocertified wood will be more expensive than uncertified wood because in order to earn ecocertification, a wood company must pay to have its business examined by a certification agency. This additional cost gets passed on to consumers-American consumers tend to be strongly motivated by price, and therefore they are likely to choose cheaper uncertified wood products. Accordingly, American wood companies will prefer to keep their prices low rather than obtain ecocertification. Third, although some people claim that it always makes good business sense for American companies to keep up with the developments in the rest of the world, this argument is not convincing. Pursuing certification would make sense for American wood companies only if they marketed most of their products abroad. But that is not the case,American wood businesses sell most of their products in the United States, catering to a very large customer base that is satisfied with the merchandise.
The main idea of both the passage and the lecture is about the wood companies’ certificated. In this line of thought, the reading states that these certificates are not a trustworthy manner. The companies feel this way for three reasons. The lecturer, on the other hand, casts doubt on all of the three episodes of arguments mentioned in the passage, believing that none of these strategies are practical and lead to the real world. In the rest of the passage, a comparison between them is provided.
First of all, the reading and the listening materials talk about American clients’ trust in the advertising. The author explains that American clients have not much trust in the advertising; on the contrary, the lecturer believes that the users are very favorably to wood products ecologically certified by independent organizations with an international reputation. This directly contradicts what the passage indicates.
Second, both the text and the talk discuss the wood product’s price. The author points out that if the wood’s firms get an ecological certification, their products’ price grown; therefore, the author elaborates that this event makes their products expensive. However, the lecturer notes that American clients usually choose lower price products, in the case of choosing between two products with low price tolerance, they would choose the products which certified ecologically. This was another place where experience contradicted the theory.
Eventually, products are transported in all of the worlds which are discussed by both the passage and the lecture. The author mentions that wood’s corporation sells most of their products in the United States, accordingly if they can market their products abroad, can pursue certification. The lecturer rebuts this argument. The lecturer states that although American corporation collects costumes slowly if foreign corporations come to the United States can roll up huge costumes in the American’s market. This opinion directly contradicts the passage presented and making it feasible.
Sum up, although the passage provides some reasons to disagree with giving wood companies the eco-certificated, the lecture opposes about the effectiveness and possibility of those reasons.
