However, there are efforts to persuade doctors to adopt electronic medical record systems in which information about patients is stored in electronic databases rather than on paper. It is argued that storing patients' medical records in electronic databases has several advantages over traditional paper-based record keeping.
The reading and lecture are both about whether traditional medical records are more efficient compared to electronic medical database. The author of the reading believes that electronic medical chart has many advantages over the traditional method. However, the lecturer casts doubts about the claims made in the passage, saying that the benefits of electronic records are uncertain.
First of all, the author points out that electronic database can help reduce the cost of storing and transferring of medical data. The article states that traditional method requires huge storage space while electronic records virtually needs no space. Conversely, the point is challenged by the lecturer. She says that doctors cannot save on cost because they will not throw out paper records, it is needed as a legal document. Furthermore, she argues that physician still pay for storage keeping even they adapted the electronic database.
Secondly, the author contends that electronic method eliminates medical error. The article establishes that electronic recording has standardize forms and data are legible fonts that help minimize human error in the process. On the contrary, the lecture rebuts this argument. She suggests that electronic records does not eliminate error, thus, doctor still write their assessment in their notes and prescription in the paper form. Moreover, she elaborates on this by mentioning that the staff are responsible for transcribing the data written in the chart, so it is possible that they can still commit mistakes in understanding the notes of the physician. Thus, the standpoint contradicts the passage.
Finally, the author states that electronic database can help medical research by gaining a lot of information from the patient records. The lecturer, on the other hand, posits that researchers are having difficulty accessing the clients record due to their access are limited and are subjected to strict privacy laws. She puts forth the idea that medical researchers needs approval from the patient in order to study their chart. Hence, most often patients refuse the their chart to be used by other people and they can block someone who tries browsing their information.
