Because of its remote location, only a few species of plants and animals thrived on Easter Island, and the water surrounding it contained very few fish. Nevertheless, beginning with extremely limited resources on an isolated island, the native people achieved a very advanced culture, as evidenced by the gigantic monolithic human figures that line the coasts, as well as by other artifacts. The complete collapse of this civilization is still a mystery, but several theories have been put forward.
The passage and the lecture are both about the collapse of the Easter colonization. The reading puts forward 3 theories about the cause of this collapse, while the lecturer contradicts the points that made by these theories.
Firstly, As the first theory suggested by the author shows that deforestation caused by cutting down a number of palm forest, which sustains the environment for agriculture, fuel, construction, and even transportation, and finally brought about serious erosion. but the professor refutes that the vast area of the palm forests was replaced by grassland which effectively prevented from erosion, then he added that all of the basic needs such as food, transportation, agriculture weren't contributed to the decline of the population.
Secondly, the author posits that rats were the main cause of this collapse because they ate the native's food supply which hidden in the canoe and they prevented the growth of some large plants. while the author argues this point by stating that this disruption would be stemmed from the rats. because people mostly consumed rats as a food source as the chicken.
Finally, A war between short-eared and long-eared people in the last theory of the author is considered as another cause of decimation of the population. However, this point was challenged by the professor that this fight was recorded earlier than Jame cook arrived on this island, the number of population, at that time, was high. so, there were some contradictions of the number of population in Easter Island.
