The tables below give information about sales of Fair-trade-labelled coffee and bananas in 1999 and 2004 in five European countries.
The tables illustrate how much Fairtrade*-labelled coffee and bananas five European countries sold in 1999 and 2004. Overall, it is clear that the sales of bananas except in Sweden and Demark all showed an upward trend in the rest countries while that of coffee all experienced an increase in the five countries from 1999 to 2004.
Starting with coffee, the sales of coffee in the UK showed an obvious increase from 1.5 million euros in 1999 to 20 million euros in 2004. The sales of coffee in Switzerland was doubled from 3 in 1999 to 6 in 2004. The same trend can be seen in the sales of coffee in Belgium, but it rose less significantly from 1 to 1.7. The figure for coffee increased by the same 0.2 million euros in Denmark and in Sweden from 1.8 to 2 and from 0.8 to 1 respectively. Even if the figures for the five countries were almost similar in 1999, the sale of coffee in the UK was apparently much higher than that in the other four countries in 2004.
Turning now to bananas, the sale of bananas in Switzerland rose the most significantly from 15 million euros in 1999 to 47 million euros in 2004, the largest number among the five countries in 2004. The same trend can be seen in figures for the UK and Belgium, but it increased less significantly (from 1 to 5.5 in the UK and from 0,6 to 4 in Belgium individually).
However, the sales of bananas in Sweden and in Denmark both experienced a decrease from 1.8 to 1 and from 2 to 0.9 separately, both the smallest numbers in 2004. It is worthwhile to notice that the figures for Switzerland were always the largest either in 1999 or in 2004.
