TPO 52-integrated writing task
The author states a few reasons of why would be the best to send people to an asteroid. As opposed to, the lecturer who counter-argues that viewpoint trying to prove that these reasons do not seem convincing.
First and foremost the writer mentions that since the asteroids are smaller than planets, they have low gravity, so this makes the landing safer. Also, it will allow a spacecraft to carry much more equipment needed to set up the colony. On the contrary, the professor cannot disagree more, reasoning that it is true that the low gravity makes the landing easier, but it also, cause health problems for the people who are there. Some of the problems are loses of muscle mass, and bone density. Because of that people would suffer health issues.
The second argument the author gives is that the asteroids are rich in valuable elements such as gold and platinum. So, people could bring these metals on Earth. As a result, the metals could be sold and they can profit from it. However, the lecturer cannot be more outraged, explaining that the cost of these metals and the transportation would cost more than they think because it may happened that the price of these metals would not be the same as the real value is. The market would decide what are the values of these metals. Which, nobody could predict.
Lastly, on one hand, the reading passage points out that asteroids are easy to reach, some of them come too close to Earth. So, would be much more affordable to get to and get back again. Nevertheless, the professor declare that it is true that it is easy to reach an asteroid, but to return back to Earth could take even longer because the orbital pathways that the spacecraft would follow is very challenging. That's why, it is not secure to take the risk.
