TPO 29- Large numbers of dinosaur fossils have been discovered in deposits on Alaska’s North Slope, a region that today experiences an extremely cold, Arctic climate. One hundred million years ago, when those dinosaurs were alive, the environment of the North Slope was already inhospitable, especially during the winter when it experienced several months of total darkness. How did the dinosaurs survive the wintertime? Paleontologists have proposed that one of the most common North Slope dinosaurs, the elephant-sized edmontosaur (Edmontosaurus), survived the winter by migrating south to more hospitable regions. Several arguments support the migration hypothesis.
The professor discusses the rapid decline of small sea mammals among North America's west coast, and why it has been proved to be controversial. The information he presents is in direct contrast with the details outlined in the reading passage.
First, the lecturer denies the claim that the pollution is the main reason for the population decline. he explains that these small mammals are probably victim of larger predators. according to the professor, the larger predators kill the mammals and as a result to the death mammals' bodies wash up on the Alaskan shore. In the contrary, the reading specify that the reason these species have rapidly diminished is the fact that many pollution sources are found among the coast which indirectly result in the mammal's death.
Secondly, the speaker points out that orcas have changed their diets routines as a result of Wales extinction. In addition, the orcas started hunting other animals of prey such as small otters which are more frequently present among the alaskan coast. On the other hand, the reading makes it clear that the extinction of various small species indicates that pollution is the main factor of their rapid decline.
Finally, the professor discusses the uneven pattern of this decline, and he mentions that many large predators as orcas cannot reach the shallow and rocky places where the population of other small otters is drastically more dense. he explains that the places which are more accessible for the predators are usual places where these small mammals decline. Nonetheless, according to the reading, the uneven pattern of concentration of pollutants is the major reason why the pollution is not present among all alaskan shore.
