Social media on Integrated task. Please summarize the reading and the lecture.
The reading and the lecture are both about social media and their effect in mental health. While the passage says that social media has no side effect, the lecture expresses a different point of view.
First, the passage claims that social media is great to advertise and is helping grow so many of the small businesses. The lecturer challenges the statement made by the author. He is of the opinion that option is overused leading to fake advertisements and a surreal competition that makes no sense. This is evident in the example with the Wish app where so many people purchased products that never arrived home.
Secondly, the author believes in social media interaction as the best way to communicate and express so much in a single paragraph or a picture. This is supported by the fact that so many photos become viral and transmit the message worldwide. This contradicts the lecture which states that virtual communication is separating people and fade the feeling away. Furthermore, he argues that nothing can make you feel the same as a handwritten letter and the texture of it in your hands. It is noted that people are more sentimental to thoughtful ideas and fall into deeper connections.
Finally, it is stated that people have more free time since all the goods are only one click away. He elaborates on this by mentioning online shopping, groceries are available online as well and life is so much easier. On the other hand, the lecturer contradicts the statement arguing that we are becoming addicted to our machines and we are going to lose the tactile sensitivity. He puts forth the idea that spending those two or three hours shopping around with your family, friends or partner is more pleasant comparing to just clicks on the keyboard.
