The line chart illustrates how many million tonnes of products were transported in the UK by different types of modes of transport between the time period of 1974 and 2002.
In general, over 28 years, the quantities of goods transported by road, water, pipeline have increased whilst the quantity transported by rail has remained almost constant.
It can be seen from the chart show that the road remains the most popular method of transporting goods in the UK from 1974 to 2002. The number of goods transported by road in 1974 and 2002 was to 70 million tonnes and 98 million tonnes respectively. It is accounted for the largest quantity of goods transported in this period while the lowest both in 1974 and 2002 was by pipeline about 5 million tonnes and 22 million tonnes respectively.
On the other hand, the number of goods transported by water remained at around 40 million tonnes between 1974 and 1978. Then there was a great rise to approximately 60 million tonnes by 1982. This level remained for over 10 years. However, in the 1990s, there was a decrease to about 50 million tonnes in 1998. Then it was rise to about 65 million tonnes in 2002.
Finally, the number of goods transported by rail gradually fell from 40 million tonnes to around 25 million tonnes from 1974 to 1995. By 1999, the quantity was at 40 million tonnes again and increase slightly by 2002.
