decline in literature readers
Both the reading passage and the lecture discuss the decline in novel, play and poem readers. While the reading says that this could result in negative consequences, the professor casts doubt on that opinion.
To begin with, the reading claims that other than literature novels and poems, readers could not find good sources of intellectual materials. However, the lecture challenges this point by saying that there are still many types of good books such as science, which have no less quality than literature novels and poems in stimulating readers' immagination and intellectual development in general.
In addition, she believe that the decrease in literature readers is not necessarily related to decline in culture understanding as mentioned in the reading passage because of the fact that literature has many forms including music and movies, which could help people understand culture even more directly.
Finally, to contrast the blame on readers in this decline trend stated in the reading passage, the professor contends that this could be authors' faults as well. She claims that there are many novels and poems which are too difficult for readers nowadays to understand.
Those aforementioned counter points of the lecture directly cast doubt on the opinion of the reading passage.
