The reading passage explains three evidence to show humpback whales use stars to navigate. However, in the lecture, the professor states that these pieces of evidence are not convincing and provides three supports for his assert.
First of all, the author of passage claims that humpback whales' intelligence led to ability that enable them to orient by using stars. While the lecturer repudiates the connection between intelligence and their navigation ability by pointing that other animals like ducks which have a medium amount of intelligence, also have general cognitive ability. Therefore, it is instinct animal capability with which they born and do not show aforementioned connection.
Additionally, the reading passage mentions that because humpback migrate on a straight line so they must be guided by an external objects like other animals that move in one direction. On the other hand, the professor explains that the external guidance is not stars but it is earth magnetic field. In other word, animals like humpback whales have bio magnetite sensor in their brain which help them to navigate.
Finally, although the passage points out the idea of spy-hopping as an instrument humpback wales use to get navigation information by looking at stars, the professor suggest sharks that show this behavior to hunt rather than look at stars. So, it is not a scarce behavior between marine animals.
