The author of the reading passage proposes several measures to prevent the spread of cane toad species in central Australia. However, the measures proposed by the author are contradicted by the lecturer. There are three main reasons for this contradiction which are listed below.
The first method proposed by the author involves the construction of national fence. The author claims that fencing will act as a barrier in preventing the spread of toad species and thereby contain their population in a particular area to prevent the spread of colonies. The lecturer opposes the authors claim. The lecturer says that fencing will only prevent the spread of toads on the land whereas it cannot stop the spread of young toads and toad eggs that are carried by the river streams which accounts for their spread through water.
Secondly, the author states that it is possible to capture and kill the toads and their young ones by employing volunteers. However, the lecturer discusses that by employing untrained volunteers to kill the toads, they can inadvertently kill the already endangered native frog species.
Thirdly, it is mentioned in the reading passage that use of specifically designed disease causing virus to attack and kill the cane toad species when they are infected without harming the infected reptiles and amphibians. The lecturer strongly objects the use of modified viruses to infect and kill the toad species. This is because, the lecturer feels that several pet collectors around the world unknowingly take pets from Australia that are infected with the virus designed to attack the toads. Thus, for instance when they take such infected pets to America where cane toads are a vital part of their ecosystem, infected virus can wipe out their native toad population leading to an ecological disaster.
