Whether's Chevalier memoir were true or not
The article states that many critics argue that Chevalier invented some of the memoirs to make his life more exciting and provides three reasons for support. However, the professor explains that all the memoirs were accurate and reliable and refutes each of the author's reasons.
First, the reading states that critics argue that Chevalier was a rich man because he had to borrow money from a Swiss merchant. The professor refutes this point by stating that Chevalier spends money on parties and gambling, and he had to wait for the money he had won, but this did not mean that he was a poor man.
Second, the article claims that Chevalier did not write many of the conversations between him and Voltaire even they had met and conversed because the conversations were written after they occurred. However, the professor contends that the conversations were made by Chevalier because each night after the conversations Chevalier wrote what he remembers from each conversation, also the professor mentions that witnesses confirm that Chevalier wrote notes after the conversations with Voltaire.
Finally, the reading states that Chevalier escaped from prison because he had a few friends that helped him to escaped from jail. The lecture avers that by saying that Chevalier was not helped for his politically well-connected friends. There were other prisoners in the jail that had well-connected friends and were not bribe. The professor mentions that after Chevalier escaped the jailers had to repair the ceiling of the jail where Chevalier was, so that confirm that indeed he escaped through the ceiling with a piece of metal. As he said he did.
