Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant
The given line chart reveals some noticeable similarities and differences between the birth rates of China and the US from 1920 to 2000. It can clearly be seen that both countries' fertility rates experienced lows during the 1940s and highs in 1950 before suffered a steady decrease until the end of the century.
Fluctuating between 11 and 13 percent for the period 1920 - 1940, birth rate in the US plunged to less than 5% in 1945 then surged to reach a peak of 15% in 1950. After that, there was a gradual decline in fertility rate to a mere 7% in 2000.
Likewise, but more wildly, Chinese birth rate saw irregular fluctuation from 10 to 15% prior to 1935 before suddenly keeping itself at the lowest level of 5% for the period of 5 years from 1940. This number also reached an immediate peak of 20% in 1950, then continued its weird trend when slumping to approximately 9% in 1955. The latter half of the century, however, saw a moderate fall to somewhere in the vicinity of 3% in this figure.
It is striking to see that despite the same downward trend eventually, fluctuation in birth rate of China was wider than that of the US. Nevertheless, the indicator from the North American country was still higher than the Asian counterpart after 1950.
