Both the reading and listening parts offer two opposing views about the possible reasons of sea cow's extinction. While the passage lists three theories for the possible causes of this extinction, the professor mentions the contradictory to those specific assumptions and presents some clues to call them into the question.
Firstly, according to the text, one of the possible reasons for this extinction is the overhunting of sea cows by the native Siberian people. However, the lecturer casts doubt on the accuracy of this surmise. As he explains, the size of the sea cow was so giant, it was nine meters tall and weighed ten tons; therefore, few of them can feed the entire native people for a month. Furthermore, the native Siberian people were no highly populated; thus, they did not require a huge amount of food sources. So, there is no reason that the native people hunted the high number of sea cows without really requiring them.
Secondly, the reading section mentioned to the possible decrement of the Klep, which was the food source of the sea cow, as the disturbances of ecosystem and feasibility of the extinction of sea cows. On the contrast, the listening part challenges this possibility. The professor asserts that there is no clue or evidence that such a severe ecosystem disturbance occurred in 1768. According to the lecturer's assertion, if there was such distinctive disturbance, other animals should also be affected by it. For instance, there should be the decrement of whales' population; however, there is no record about these types of decline. Consequently, this hypothesis cannot be accountable for this extinction.
Finally, meanwhile, the passage considers the arrival of European fur traders to the Siberia as the possible causes of this extinction, the instructor, on the other hand, refutes this surmise. Based on the professor's logic, although by traders' arrival, the sea cows were extinct completely, the decrements of the population had been started the hundred years ago, and they were not the main reason of this extinction.
