The chart below shows the total number of minutes (in billions) of telephone calls in the UK, divided into three categories, from 1995 - 2002.
The bar graph provides information about the phone calls made in the uk in 7 years, including local calls, national and international calls, and mobile calls. Units are measured in billions of minutes.
The general trend shown in the chart illustrates a rapid increase in the number of calls made by mobile phone over the given period. Similarly, national and international phone calls on a fixed-line rose steadily from 1995 to 2002. A slight increase, followed by a rapid decrease, is visible in the rate of local, fixed-line, calls, that remained, however, the most used method of phone communication.
In 1995, more than 70 billions of minutes of local calls were made in the UK on fixed lines. This proportion grew marginally to reach a peak of 90 billion 4 years later, but after that, it decreased steadily to the same amount of 7 years before. Conversely, phone calls made nationally and internationally on a fixed-line increased their rate gradually. The figure was just below 40 billion in 1995, but it reached 60 billion in 2001 and proceeded to remain steady.
The category which went up significantly over the years is the mobile phone calls, with its only 2 billions of minutes of calls made in 1995. A first peak was reached in 1999 with just over 10 billion, but the rate increased by three times in the following 3 years.
