the Everglades' environmental issues
The reading and the lecture both talk about the Everglades. The reading passage says that the everglades is endangered because of several environmental problems. The lecturer, however, argues that these issues that threaten the Everglades has been alleviated for several reasons.
To begin with, the article contends that the Everglades is polluted by fertilizers that sugarcane farms and other agriculture uses, lowering the amount of oxygen in the water. On the contrary, the lecturer disagrees with this argument. He claims that water pollution level has been declined because of the government’s regulations regarding the use of fertilizer and limiting fertilizers from including harmful ingredients.
Secondly, the author, in the reading, says that the fertile soil in the Everglades will be diminished due to drain of 19th by US government. By contrast, the lecturer casts doubt on this assertion. He insists that this soil has been recovering by local people. Although this recovering project might take long time, eventually the land will be nourished with vibrant ecosystem.
The final point made in the reading is that natural species in the Everglades are taken away their inhabitants by human activities. However, the lecturer goes against this point by stating that the new government bought the property that was used to be cultivated sugar canes, and they planned to convert this area to marsh where it used to be. Moreover, he points out that by obtaining this region, the Florida panther will have their larger habitats, which will increase the possibility of their survival.
