The passage claims that the best colonization option is sending people to an asteroid by pointing out three reasons for support. The lecture, on the other hand, states that it is not a very practical idea and refutes each of the author's reasons.
The passage claims that the best colonization option is sending people to an asteroid by pointing out three reasons for support. The lecture, on the other hand, states that it is not a very practical idea and refutes each of the author's reasons.
First of all, the writer goes on to mention that low gravity would help easier taking off and landing on the surface of the asteroid, which leads to less use of fuel and much more space for equipment. On the contrary, the professor rejects this by explaining that low gravity has some certain risks and brings health problem for long term colonization. Losing muscle power and decline in bone density are some examples of these problems.
Furthermore, the reading explains that some asteroids are a source of valuable raw materials and metals like gold and platinum. Conversely, the listening supports an opposite view as compared to that presented in the passage; he describes that the cost of transporting metal between earth and the asteroid is very high. Moreover, there is no guarantee which the price will remain as same as now. Because an increase in the supply of a product will reduce its price.
Finally, the author argues that some of the asteroids are very close to the earth, even closer than Mars and Moon. Therefore, it will be easy to reach them. The speaker, in contrast, rejects the author's view and illustrates the idea that it may not easy to return from the landed asteroid to Earth. The asteroids will move away a great distance from the Earth. They circle on a specific orbit which gets close to the earth, however, they will not stay close and will move away even farther than Mars and Moon.
