Some people think that cultural traditions will be destroyed when they are used as money-making attractions aimed at tourists. Others, however, believe that is the only way to save these traditions. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Cultural traditions are losing their original charm and even heavily damaged due to the exploitation of money-making attractions in tourism. Others, however, think that it is an ideal way to preserve these traditions. In my opinion, while the trend of utilizing cultural traditions for tourist purposes perhaps serve as a mean of protection, I believe that this could pose a problem to its diversity and existence.
According to some people’s perspectives, exploiting local cultural traditions for tourism is the best way to save them because governments annually invest their budget in different works including development and refurbishment in order to preserve these traditions. For example, Hanoi is famous for its ancient towns and house structures for many years, and to prevent them from running down, a great deal of investments has been introduced to rebuild and retain original factors. Not only is this good for the conservation of this city, but it also helps attract a lot of people’s attention, coming from all sorts of background and willingly paying for visit purposes.
Apart from the reason expressed above, I believe that this trend would pose a threat to the diversity and existence of traditional and cultural values because of the bad consciousness among people. They often litter trash, take photographs without permission and break artifacts. For example, the first university of Hanoi is famous for many turtle statues with the stone-made board on their back, which are used to record the achievement of students in the past. Even though this place is a great economic source of Vietnam since it has been commercialized, the turtles’ heads, however, are now heavily damaged by tourists, constantly touching them to gain luck.
In conclusion, although some people think that tourism has done its best job in protecting cultural tradition to some extent, I, however, would argue that by the negative impacts made by tourists, these cultural traditions would be damaged or even destroyed in the long-run.
