The lecture and the reading discuss the declining population of the yellow cedar trees which live in North American. Although the passage claims that scientists have several hypotheses that explain this phenomenon, the speaker refutes this idea through several reasons which I will describe in this reporter.
First and foremost, the passage points out that some insect like a beetle attack to cedar trees, and kill them. The lecturer, in contrast, rejects this by claiming that healthy yellow cedar trees are much more resistant than other trees. He explains that healthy yellow cedar trees produce a chemical saturated liquid that it is toxic. Therefore, if the tree becomes healthy, the beetle cannot attack the yellow cedar tree. Hence, yellow cedar trees became damage and old before a beetle attack on them.
Furthermore, although the reading passage says that some bears destroyed yellow cedar trees by cut it down and used a high sugar content, the professor argues that yellow cedar trees were lived in both vast area and some islands. In the island, bears did not live, but yellow cedar trees became disappear. Thus, beers cannot be the main reason for declining yellow cedar trees.
Finally, although the reading passage says that climate changes would other reasons for the declining population of yellow cedar trees. The speaker disagrees by mentioning that in lower elevation the weather was warmer than the higher elevation. But, we see that more cedar trees destroyed in lower elevation. Indeed, it is not the main reason for the declining of cedar trees.
