Easter Iland population decrease
population of easter island declined drastically. For this change author has given three different theories while speaker casts doubt on them by giving reasons and examples. three different theories are deforestation, rat theory, and fights between two tribes.
Firstly, speaker states that according to author local people started cutting down trees and build stone statue wall near the coast in order to regrow plants. deforestation had large impact on population decline. according to authd there are some drawbacks in this theory because people replaced forest with grasslands, furthermore deforestation had a purpose of using it as shelter so this theory do not support population decrease.
Second theory given by author was about rats. rats prevented reporestation by easting tender and newly grown plants. rats were introduced to island from outside, they thought to travelled to islant via small boats. speaker thinks that this is missconseption, its true that rats are exogenous species of island. they partially contributed to disturbance of ecosystem. Localoids used rats as well as chiken as food. he provide evidence for this by saying that bones of rats found with the bones of chiken in the dumpyard and dustbeans. this theory also disapproved by speaker by giving evidence.
Thirdly, speaker suggests that there is some time miscaluculation because of this theory of fight between long and short ear people do not stand againts point made by him. Additionally, speaker gives information provided by varies travelers. Originally 3000 people were living on easter iland and during visit of James Cook, he found that population has decreased and actual traditional fights happened before long time ago.
Last but not the least, speaker lucidely neagates the theories made by author by giving final conclusion that these theories were not satisfactory and mysteory will remain as it is. these are not proper explanations of population decline on easter iland.
