The diagram illustrates the process of electricity generation via a hydroelectric power station.
Overall, this process is separated into two parts, which are during the day and night. The water comes in from the river and passes several points in the day time. On the other hand, the flow of water would go back behind the dam during night time.
First, looking into the day time process, after water being collected behind the higher level reservoir, it will flow through a gate beneath the dam. Then, it would turn the turbines, which will produce electricity. This electricity will go through power lines and then reaches the national grid. Finally, the water will be kept in the lower level reservoir.
Conversely, during the night, the turbine will act as a pump to send back the water behind the higher level dam. Consequently, the water would flow from the lower dam to the higher one with the aid of turbines. Also, the gates at the higher level reservoir are closed during the night.
