In many organizations, perhaps the best way to approach certain new projects is to assemble a group of people into a team.
Having a team of people attack a project offers several advantages. First of all, a group of people has a wider range of knowledge, expertise, and skills than any single individual is likely to possess. Also, because of the numbers of people involved and the greater resources they possess, a group can work more quickly in response to the task assigned to it and can come up with highly creative solutions to problems and issues. Sometimes these creative solutions come about because a group is more likely to make risky decisions that an individual might not undertake. This is because the group spreads responsibility for a decision to all the members and thus no single individual can be held accountable if the decision turns out to be wrong.
Taking part in a group process can be very rewarding for members of the team. Team members who have a voice in making a decision will no doubt feel better about carrying out the work that is entailed by the decision than they might doing work that is imposed on them by others. Also, the individual team member has a much better chance to "shine", to get his or her contributions and ideas not only recognized but recognized as highly significant, because a team's overall results can be more far-reaching and have greater impact than what might have otherwise been possible for the person to accomplish or contribute working alone.
The reading and the lecture are both about whether working in group is beneficial or not. The author of the reading thinks that it is advantageous and provides various examples of it. The lecturer challenges the claim made by the author. he is of the opinion that working in team is have some ill effects.
To begin with, the author argues that working in a team is helpful for a team member. The article mentions that by working with people of different domains one get a chance to gather more knowledge and learn more skills. this specific argument is challenged by the lecturer. he claims that in such organization many members get a free time. Additionally, he says that such members without even contributing are able to get recognition for their work because of which the real contributors have opposite attitude towards the idea of team work.
Secondly, the writer suggests that team projects are usually completed very quickly and creatively. In the article it is said that as project is developed by various experts showing celerity in their work make the project gets finished on time. Along with this, a team is able to make project having many innovative features because by working in team, a member's risk taking ability increases. The lecturer, however rebuts this by mentioning that rather the project completion rate is delayed by working in team. he elaborates on this by bringing up the point that it becomes very difficult to reach a consensus and due to repeated meetings more time is spent on making decisions rather than actual work.
Finally, the author posits that such a structure of doing work can be rewarding for the members. Moreover, in the article it is stated that the decision maker will feel better in this way because he will now be able to voice his thoughts. There would be higher chances of getting recognition as by working in team the outcomes will be more far-reaching, which cannot be possible if a person is working in alone. In contrast, the lecturer' position is that working in team creates discord among members as some of them become influencers in the team and convince many of them to follow their line of thought and if anyone argues he is immediately shunned by the other members of the team. however, if any failure occurred in the project then the complete team is blamed for the debacle.
