TPO 34: integrated writing task
The main topic of both the reading passage and the lecture is about the extinction of Steller's sea cows. The author of the reading proposes three hypotheses for their extinction. However, the lecturer finds all of the hypothesis dubious and present some evidence to refute them all.
First of all, the reading passage holds the view that overhunting of cows which were a good food supply for the native population of Siberia could be a potential cause of their extinction. On the contrary, the speaker underlines the fact that those creatures were enormous and massive. They were 9 meters long and approximately 10 tons. Furthermore, the Siberian population was not large and just one cow could supply the village for one month. Hence, the assumption of overhunting is not convincing.
Furthermore, the author claims that a change in the ecosystem could disturb the food chain and lead to the extinction of sea cows. A change may have happened and led to a decline of kelps, the main food source of sea cows, which then had resulted in cows extinction. In contrast, the speaker dismisses this assertion due to the fact that that change should have been really severe in order to reduce the kelps' population also it could have affect other marine species like whales and there is no evidence to confirm this issue.
Finally, the author claims that the main cause of the extinction of sea cows was the fur trade by the Europian fur trader which hunted the cows for their furs. However, the lecturer refutes them claim by indicating that when the Europeans had arrived Siberia the population of sea cows was already declined. Therefore, something before the arrival of the European should be considered as the main cause of sea cows extinction.
