Compare percentages of travelers to go to work in a country in Europe
The bar chart shows changes in the proportion of commuters using different forms of transport in a European nation in three separate years.
Overall, there was an increase in the popularity of the car as a mode of transport from 1950 to 1990. Besides, while the figures for bus users fluctuated, people walked and cycled less to work.
In 1950, there was around 35% of people walked to work and nearly 27% of those cycling. However, the figure for the former halved to 17% and the proportion of cyclists also dropped by 5% in 1970. In 1990, the use of the two forms of transport continued to decline, with the figures for bicycles and foot falling to 5% and 10% respectively.
By contrast, the percentage of those driving to work rose dramatically, rising from around 7% in 1950 to just over 35% in 1990. On the other hand, the figure for commuting bus passengers fluctuated. There was 20% of bus commuters in 1950, and this rose to 27% in 1970 before plunging to about 17% at the end of the period.
