settlement of the Chaco Canyon
The lecture showed the three theories that explain the about the settlement of the Chaco Canyon in New Mexico. However, the passage contradicts the theory presented in the lecture.
Firstly, the lecture said that even though the settlements look like the apartment building from the outside they are not meant for the residential area of the family. Because, although the inside of the building has many rooms, it does not contain the many fire rooms as required, for say 100 families. Each family cook food every day so these buildings are not to be meant for the residential area. This opposes the ideas in the passage which says that the buildings are purely for residential areas of 100 people each.
Secondly, the lecture showed that the buildings are not used for storing food supplies, maize. As there are no traces of the maize present anywhere, also there are no containers of maize. On the other hand, the passage stated that buildings are for storing food supplies as the size of the house is suitable for storing maize.
Thirdly, according to the lecture, the buildings are not meant for the ceremonial centers. Because these structure has the building material and construction material. Again the broken pots are of the workers who eat a meal there. However, the passage said that the structures are used for ceremonial centers as there are discarded pots of the festive meal.
Thus, we can conclude that although the passage says that the structures in Chaco are used either for any of the reasons residential, storing food supplies or for the ceremonial center. The lecture shows how it has opposes the reasons.
