Rembrandt is the most famous of the seventeenth-century Dutch painters. However, there are doubts about whether some painters attributed to Rembrandt were actually. painted by him. One such painting is known as Portrait of Elderly Women in a White Bonner. The painting was attributed to Rembrandt because of its style, and indeed the representation of the women's face is very much like that of portraits known to be by Rembrandt. But there are problems with the painting that suggests it could to be a work by Rembrandt.
First, there is something inconsistent about the way the woman in the portrait is dressed. She is wearing a white linen cap of a kind that only servants would wear-yet the coat she is wearing has a luxurious fur collar that no servant could afford. Rembrandt, who was known for his attention to the details of his subjects' clothing, would not have been guilty of such inconsistency.
Second, Rembrandt was master of a painting of light and shadows, but in this painting, these elements do not fit together. The face appears to be illuminated by light reflected onto it from below. But below the face is dark fur collar., which would absorb the light instead of reflecting it. So the face should appear partially in shadow which is not how it appears. Rembrandt would never have made such an error.
Third, an examination of the back of the painting reveals that it was painted on the panel made of several pieces of wood glued together. Although Rembrandt often painted on wood panels, no painting known to be by Rembrandt uses a panel glued together in this way from several pieces of wood.
For these reasons, the painting was removed from the official catalog of Rembrandt's painting in the 1930s.
The article states that Rembrandt us the most famous painter of the seventeenth-century in Dutch. However, there is a doubt about one painting that the weather is painted by Rembrandt. That painting is known as Portrait of an Elderly Woman in a White Bonnet. On the other side, the lecturer states that this painting is originally painted by Rembrandt and gives three reasons to support that idea.
First, the reading passage claims that a woman in the portrait is wearing a white linen cap that only servants would wear, but the coat she is wearing is luxurious and a servant would not be able to afford that kind of costly coat. The author believes that Rembrandt would pay attention to this kind of detail in his painting. On contrary, professor refutes this point because when X-ray was taken of this painting it suggested that fur in this painting drawn 100 years after the painting was done. It means the painting originally was drawn by the Rembrandt.
Second, the author points out that Rembrandt was a master in painting the light and shadows, but in this painting, the face appears to be reflects illuminated by the light which reflects from the below. However, the professor explained that fur was painted after the painting was done that why the face lighting does not appear correct. When painting originally painted without the coat by Rembrandt that time face shadow appears correct.
Third, the reading passage says that painting was done on the woods pieces which were glued together. And Rembrandt never used that type wood pieces which were glued together, he always used the one wood piece for his painting. The professor opposes this point by explaining that when researchers examine the wood piece, they find out that it was from the same tree when Rembrandt use the wood pieces in one of the self-portraits. The professor also explained that when fur was painted that time extra wood piece was glued to expand the painting and increase the price of the painting.
