Humpback whales migrate for many reasons, for example, to feed themselves and mate. They are said to navigate by using stars to migrate, however, this is contradicted by professor.
Although humpback whales seem to be intelligent enough to use stars for their orientation, the professor explains that the evidence is not convincing, and that there is no connection between using stars and intelligence. There are other animals using this method, for example, birds also use stars to migrate. So, it is not a sign of intelligence.
Even though Humpback whales migrate in straight lines, the professor claims that there are different explanations for this behavior. There is an external force which is called the magnetic field, and humpback whales have a substance bio magnetied in their brain. In general, the bio magnetic is what makes the body sensitive to the magnetic field and this suggests whales migrate by using magnetic field instead of stars.
According to the reading, humpback whales exhibit an unusual behavior, which is known as spy hopping to look at stars. The professor, however, argues that this behavior is not weird. This is because there is another animal doing the same behavior; for example, sharks use it for hunting not for look at stars.
