TPO 8 the Chevalier s memoir accuracy
The reading claims that accuracy of memoir writtend by the Chevalier is skeptical. Plenty critics claims he distorts and invents many events to make his life more exciting. Nevertheless, the professor casts dount on it and believe that the memoir are pretty accurate and reliable source.
First, the reading states that the Chevalier was not wealthy because borrowed considerable sums of money from a Swiss merchant. However, the speaker states that the Chevalier who borrowed a great deal of money, was not poor. He has a lot of assets which sold it and use its money for parties and gambling. Therefore, the Chevalier was waiting for his money to arrive when he borrowed money.
Second, according to the lecture, the Chevalier completed his memoir after many years that he meets Voltairs. Hence, it is not possible to remember all the conversation accurately. In contrast, the lecturer explains that the Chevalier after meeting Voltaire wrote what he remembered about their conversation at each night. Moreover, some witnesses exist which say he consult with others and kept writing for many years.
Third, based on the passage, critics believe that escap from jail is just for making his reading more enjoyable and Since the Chevalier had a lot of politically well-connected friend, he was able to bribe the jailer and escape the prison. On the contrary, the speaker assests that many other prisons have more powerful friends than the Chevalier but they could not escape the prison. Also, the ceiling of the Chevalier was repaired after his escape and because of that we can accept he escape from ceiling.
