TPO 52 Integrated Essay - Asteroids Colonization
The professor casts doubt about the possibility of asteroids colonization. He presents three reasons that contradicts the facts presented in the reading.
Although asteroids have better landing conditions due to low gravity, the lecturer highlights some health risks of living in this environment. The professor states that low gravity can lead to serious injuries such as muscle loss and bone density loss. He supports his argument with the example of the astronauts that usually have these issues when they are still in a few weeks on the space.
Even though asteroids have precious metals in abundance, as the reading describes, the lecturer explains that a big investment would be needed to support the colony and develop the logistic system to bring the metals to Earth. He also says that the metals are expensive on earth because they are rare. However, once the amount of metal in the market increases, it would become common and probably decrease the value and the price. So, he states that there is no guaranty that it would be a good business and make profit.
It is true that it would be easier to reach an asteroid that is closer to the Earth than one planet. On the other hand, the professor discusses that asteroids do not stay at the same place for long periods. He explains that they keep moving and can reach a distance larger than Mars. In this case, the return to Earth could be really difficult.
