Rembrandt
Rembrandt is one of the most distinguished Dutch painters. The art historians, however, cast a doubt whether some of his works were actually painted by him. The author in the reading passage discusses such painting and states that it was created by someone else. Nevertheless, the lecturer opposes this point of view by refuting all of his points.
According to the author, the first problem connected with the painting is the inconsistency about the woman's garment. She is wearing a type of clothes that only servant
would wear, but simultaneously there is a luxurious fur collar on her which a servant would not be able to afford. Rembrandt was known to be very attentive to such details, thus he wouldn't make such a mistake. Yet, the lecturer mentions recent scientific analysis which has shown that the collar was layered hundreds years later. She assumes that someone wanted to make the painting look more valuable by presenting it as a formal portrait.
In addition, the author talks about light and shadow details that do not fit together. Because of the dark fur collar, the face should appear partially in shadow, which is not how it appears. He claims that the famous painter wouldn't allow such flaws in the final result. Albeit, the lecturer believes that in the original version shadow and light proportion was well-balanced. As there was no collar on it, the shadow on the face was not needed.
Finally, the author brings up the examination of a back panel, on which the painting was painted on. It contained several wood pieces glued together. Rembrandt indeed used wooden panel for his art, but it was always made of only one solid piece. The lecturer believes that these small pieces were added later in order to make the painting look more valuable and expensive. Moreover, she assumes that the middle piece of the panel was made from the same tree, as another Rembrandt's painting.
