Your town council is thinking about banning the use of mobile phones on public transport and in shops and restaurants.
Write a letter to the town council giving your opinion about this and why you think it is or is not a good idea.
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing regarding the recent debates over the use of mobile devices in publicity, for example on public transport, in shops or restaurants. The idea proves to have certain implications to both professional and personal lives of the citizens and is undoubtedly a double-edged sword.
On the one hand, such restrictions could enhance the quality of life in the city generally as people would not get disturbed by constant notifications and phone calls. Thus, instead of being irritated by noise, which may lead to headaches and result in the downturn in efficiency at workplaces, people are likely to have some extra rest on their way to work. The lines in the shops might cease to be an issue because people would not get distracted at the cashier's. After all, people finally would learn to spend family time together mindfully rather than stare at their phones or cause inconvenience to other people there due to loud talks on the phone or catchy tunes that are difficult to get rid of later.
On the other hand, such a ban could result in failed job interviews, bankruptcies or even deaths. Cannot a person answer a call of a relative who has had a stroke, the latter might face unpleasant consequences and some of them can turn out to be irreversible. What I am leading to is that in case of emergency people must have access to their cell phones to ensure their financial, personal or professional life is safe and sound otherwise it is nothing but a gross violation of human rights.
When it comes to my opinion, I truly believe that citizens could benefit from certain limitations on the use of mobiles phones in public places. Yet, those limitations should by no means violate human rights and be chosen carefully to ensure the changes are done for the better. Another point to consider is how to prevent people from abusing the right to use phones in case such restrictions are placed.
Yours,
Nancy Adams
