A person’s worth nowadays seems to be judged according to social status and material
possessions. Old-fashioned values, such as honour, kindness and trust, no longer seem
important.
To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own
knowledge or experience.
Write at least 250 words.
Some people say that the times, when people were judged by the positive traits of their character are long gone. Accordingly to them, a person's status is based on wealth and being a celebrity. As disheartening as it is, I agree with this opinion.
Until quite recently person's worth was commonly decided by their character; being kind, honest and trustworthy was admirable. Unfortunately, this old-fashion values has lost its importance while being replaced with superficial and meaningless one's. Nowadays, celebrity status is something acquired, usually with the use of personal wealth and social media popularity. For example Kim Kardashian became famous only because she was a friend to Paris Hilton, who in turn, was best known for being a daughter of a head of a hotel empire. Next step in creating The Kardashian brand was the infamous video, apparently leaked by an ex-partner. That led to increased social presents and in turn creation of the TV show.
Furthermore, this evenement is observed in schools, starting at the primary level and only gets escalated with age. It is common for children to be automatically assigned to cliques based on their clothing: brand and value, and popularity. Kids outside the group often are bullied and excluded from certain activities like parties or outings. Their personal values, like kindness, helpfulness or respectfulness, are dismissed as old-fashioned and not important. Recent research conducted at the University of Keele shows that, worryingly, 78% of 10-year-olds would prefer to be a friend with someone famous, rather than compassionate.
In conclusion, it seems that current bias is towards judging people by their possession and popularity, while the old-fashion values are a part of the bygone era.
