Sea Cows
The reading passage provides three theories about the reasons that might cause sea cows extinction. However, the lecturer finds all the theories discussed by the reading passage dubious and suggested some evidence to refute them all.
First, the writer claims that overhunting of the sea caws by the native people might cause the see cows extinction. On the contrary, the professor dismisses this idea due to the fact that sea cows were large animals with nine meters long and about ten tons of weight. On the other hand, the native people's population was not very large. So, they did not need to hunt a large number of sea cows for feed and they could not be responsible for sea cows extinction.
Furthermore, the author asserts that a decrease in the number of available food sources for sea cows led to extinction. It claims that changes in ecosystems decrease the kept which was the main source of the sea cows' food. Conversely, the speaker underlines the fact that if ecosystems were changed in those years, other marine animals such as Whales should be affected. However, there is not any report that proves any changes in a number of other species.
Finally, the reading passage believes that European fur traders could be the reason for sea cows extinction. Because they advantaged weapons. Also, the last sea cow has been caught by them. The reading, on the other hand, makes the argument that the sea cows extinct soon after European fur traders arrived there. Also, when they arrived the number of sea cows was low.
