The article states that asteroid colonization can be good option and provides three reasons of support. However, the professor explains that this is not a practical idea and refutes each of the author's reasons.
First of all, the reading claims that the low gravity on asteroids makes landing and takeoff easier, so the spaceships do not need to carry as much fuel and can carry more equipments with them. The professor refutes this point by mentioning that although low gravity makes landing and takeoffs easier, it also presents some risks. He explains that in low gravity condition, the astronauts' muscle mass and bone density will decrease. He goes on to say that even astronauts who spend just a few months in spaceships orbiting the earth, face these health problems and this danger is much higher if astronauts have to stay longer in low gravity on an asteroid.
Secondly, the article posits that by mining valuable materials such as gold, which can be found easily on asteroids, their colonization is profitable. This idea is challenged by the professor by saying that this is not the whole picture. He states that the cost of separating and transporting these metals to earth could be so much high that it reduces the profit. He elaborates on this by mentioning that the selling price of these metals may not remain the same, because when metals become available in large quantities, the supply will increase and thus the market price will decrease.
Finally, the reading says that since asteroids are easy to reach, they are a good option for colonization. However, the professor opposes this posit by saying that though some of these asteroids may be easy to reach, they may not be easy to return from. He explains that some of these asteroids have unusual orbits and while they may come near earth, they won't stay close and may go much farther from earth. Hence, getting back from these asteroids will be a big challenge.
