TPO 32: integrated writing task
Both the reading and the lecture talk about what might have been the source of such bizarre noises, which were called "quackers". The reading presents some theories indicating that what might have caused such strange noises. The professor, on the other hand, casts doubt on this claim by bringing up three reasons to refute specific points made in the reading passage.
To begin with, the author alleges that submarines were detecting such odd sounds from the area that was the inhabitant of orca whales, and such noises were the orca whale couples' sounds while trying to attract a male for courtship ritual. Conversely, the lecturer rejects this view and highlights that orca whales virtually live on the ocean's surface. Submarines remained in the deep of the ocean and were unable to hear such noises near the surface. As a result, these noises were not the call of the male and female orca whales.
Furthermore, the reading holds the view that giant squids, which lived deep in the ocean, caused such odd noises since they have enough intelligent brain to emit such sounds. Because of having soft bodies without a skeleton, the detection of such animals is too hard by sonar. In contrast, the professor refuses this viewpoint, stating that such noises started in the 1960s and finished by the 1980s, but giant squids are still living deep ocean. If the source of such sounds is such animals, submarines should still hear them. Therefore, because of not detecting such noises by submarines, such sounds were not the sound of giant squids.
Finally, the author points out that such strange froglike sounds were picked up by Russian submarines from military technology. Also, such technology brought up submarines to be not detected by sonar. The lecture, however, opposes this issue due to the fact that such noises moved around and changed direction much quickly, unlike submarines' noise. Moreover, nowadays, submarines do not have the technology to change direction fast and silent engine with any noises. Duse, the source of such noises are not submarines.
