The given table illustrates the area of forest in 6 regions of the world in millions of hectares during the period of 1990 and 2005.
As can be seen from the table, the forest areas in Africa, North America, South America and Oceania witnessed a downward trend while that of Asia and Europe experienced the opposite trend. It is also evident that Europe had the largest forest area among all studied regions.
In 1990, Europe had 989 millions of hectares of forest, which rose and peaked at 1001 in 2005. Likewise, Asian forest saw a considerable surge from 576 in 1990 to 584 in 2005.
On contrast, there is a precipitous fall of 58 million hectares in African forest area, levelling off at 691 in 2005. Similarly, South America areas of forest started at 946 million hectares in 1990, at which the figure displayed a plunge to 882 million hectares. North America and Oceania demonstrated a marginal decrease in forested land, reaching each lowest point of 705 and 197 million hectares respectively.
