The article states some theories about main purposes of carving some stone balls, which were found in Scotland. The author provides three hypothesis and provides reasons to support each of them. However, the professor claims that the reasons claimed in the reading are not very convincing and refutes each of the author's reasons.
First of all, the reading claims that the stone balls might be used for hunting or fighting as weapons. There are some holes on their surface which strength the theory that they were used as war wares. The professor refutes this opinion by saying that as they do not have any signs of this usage, such as crack or fracture, they would not be used as weapons.
Secondly, the article posits that while the carved stones have same shape and same size, it is likely that they were used for weighing system. However, the professor says that although they are equal in size and shape, their weight are too different due to their material which they were made by. Some of them were made by quartzite and some of them made by lime stone and greenstone. So, these materials have different density which make their weight different. Therefore, they would not be used for weighing.
Third, the reading says that as many stones have elaborate shape on their surface, they might be carved for social aims. The professor opposes this opinion by explaining that in addition of puzzling shapes on the carved stones, there are many simple shapes were graved on the balls to. Also, none of these balls were not found in ancient tombs or graves.
